When the internet became widely available, people predicted that travel advisors would disappear because travelers could search for flights, hotels and destinations themselves. What followed was not a shortage of information. It was an overwhelming amount of it: conflicting reviews, sponsored recommendations, outdated details, copied itineraries and advice written for someone else’s vacation.

AI makes that search faster. It can summarize thousands of pages in seconds, but it still depends on the information it was given. A polished answer can be outdated, incomplete or confidently wrong. More information has never been the same as better guidance.

What AI can do well

AI can be useful for brainstorming destinations, comparing broad ideas, organizing questions, creating packing lists and helping travelers understand what they may want to research next. I use technology in my own business because the right tools can make an experienced professional more efficient.

What AI cannot taste, feel or personally experience

AI cannot tell you how the food actually tasted, how a hotel felt when you walked through the door, whether a neighborhood felt right for you, or whether an itinerary that looks beautiful on a screen felt rushed in real life. It cannot notice the details that make one trip flow naturally while another leaves you exhausted.

Those experiences give me context that a search result cannot. I remember taking the ferry along Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, finding some of the best tacos I have eaten in Split, discovering wonderful Indian food in Dubrovnik and visiting the historic Franciscan pharmacy there because I am also a pharmacist. I have taken cooking classes, explored markets, compared hotels in person and learned how the pace of a trip feels once the itinerary becomes a real day—not a list on a screen.

AI can tell you that a flight was canceled or help you draft a complaint. It cannot speak with the supplier holding your reservation, use the booking terms and professional relationships behind the trip, advocate for the correct resolution or follow the issue through personally.

A real example from today

While I was writing this article, a traveler called me from his hotel. He had booked and paid for a sea-view room through me, but the hotel placed him in a room overlooking a building. Management initially offered to move him to a sea-view room for an additional $300 per night.

I contacted the manager and explained that my client had already paid for the contracted sea-view category. He could not simply be downgraded, and if that room category was unavailable, the hotel needed to provide an appropriate resolution. Because I could advocate directly using the booking terms and our professional relationship, the hotel moved him—at no additional charge—to a suite with a full sea view and balcony.

That is the difference between receiving information and having a real person responsible for helping protect your vacation.
